James Hughes walked up Carrock Fell on May 15th, 2025 [from/via/route] c200 High Pike, Knott & Great Calva [weather] Cold start in morning. Cool on tops with strong breeze on Great Calva. Warm on descent in afternoon. - Parked near Home Farm so needed to walk to Mosedale Bridge. Plenty of parking Quakers Meeting House. Also good parking for direct route up eastern side of Carrock Fell. Walked up from Swineside approach. Good climb then onto flat plateau. Impressive top with cairn. Easy enjoyable walk to High Pike. Return to join Cumbria Way to Linghy Hut & then up to Knott. Fairly easy descent & ascent up to Great Calva. Impressive views & prominence of Fell. Descent not overly enjoyable, steep through heather. Enjoyable lunch stop at Wiley Beck. Feet revived by water dip. Pleasant return via Cumbria Way alongside River Caldew. Stayed at Hudscales Farm & few pints at Old Crown Hesket Newmarket.

Mose dale valley on the way back beautiful. Chap lost his dog on Round Knott & Milton, but found him. I lost my map & waterbottle!

Going South I followed sign to Swineside on right from farm buildings. Just after last house on left, took path on right to Carrock Fell. [with] No longer with my Mya, she was put to sleep aged 15 and 4 months. I miss her so much. However, i took Jazz another Patterdale as I was looking after her while her owners were skiing. [weather] Light rain & wind, with low cloud throughout walk. - tbh I lost my way a little in the low cloud & hit the ridge towards Round Knott, so traversed right to top. Heading towards High Pike next.

[with] On my Own [weather] Dry Day & a bit overcast in the morning although it did become sunny & clear in the afternoon.

[with] Me & Sheila [weather] No rain. Winds were increasing at the beginning but dropped at the end. Fair day. Gloves & coat for the top. - The ascent up Carrock Fell was interesting. Thankfully nobody was there to want to be passed. Steep & narrow & fortunately dry otherwise I'm not sure my feet would have been as secure at points. Just beat to get up it, couldn't really hand around. Tops were as expected but quite boggy in parts. First time I've seen a bothy

[weather] Sunny, clouding over later. - The climb up Poddy Gill was a bit of a plod but once the rocky top was reached it was more interesting. The top iitself is enclosed by the ruins of an iron age fort I think. The fine cairn, set on a rocky plinth, gives outstanding views especially northwards towards the Borders, the Solway Firth & the Northern Pennines.

Tried short cut to ford river lower down but water too high. Walked to road instead. Road flooded causing obstruction to cars
