In-use Test:

The Extol walking trousers make use of Regatta's own warm backed knitted stretch, breathable fabric and are new to the range for Autumn/Winter 2009.

My initial impression was that they were very comfortable and easy to wear. They fitted well overall and, although the bottoms are not adjustable, the length was good and the trousers did sit well over my walking boots without any excess bagginess.

The material is certainly comfortable next to the skin plus the sideways stretchiness contributed to the really very good freedom of movement.

I've worn the Extols is some wet Autumn weather so far. The water repellancy was good - quite heavy rain only really started to penetrate after about half an hour or so. However - they do dry extremely quickly. I've yet to wear them in hot weather - but the addition of the side ventilation (which zipped open and shut very easily) bodes well for Spring/Summer wear.

The pockets are probably the biggest disappointment in the Extols. The side pockets are really quite small - they only just take a wallet and the front zipped pocket is similarly small. There is a slightly bigger back pocket but no cargo-style pocket at all.

Buying Advice:

The lack of seat/knee reinforcement means that these may not be the best option for walking involving a lot of scrambling. However, for more general walking, Regatta's Extols are a great value option. Walk in them all year round except in really cold or really hot days. You will need to use them with waterproof over trousers in wet conditions.

If you are going to wear them, them do wear them with a jacket that has good pockets.
