Sweat rash when walking in warm weather

Q. Whenever I walk in warm weather I get a sweat rash around my ankles.

Anyone have the same problem? How do I beat this?

Jennifer Thompson, Wakefield

A. I have already mentioned wearing Coolmax padded running socks, because they are padded it's not necessary to wear two pairs of socks. If you do get a heat rash Arnica is very good and really works.

A. I too have had this problem when walking in hot weather. I found some Coolmax New York padded cycling socks, they are a little short but it's not necessary to wear two pairs of socks. I have worn these socks for several weeks without any rash, which was brilliant and recommended them to my friends. I have just walked on two extremely hot days and unfortunately the rash returned, but under normal conditions it seemed to prevent the rash.

A. I too suffer from this and it occurs no matter what socks/liners I wear. I take an antihistamine oill such as Piriton prior to wlking and have found that this alleviates the problem but doesn't prevent it 100%.

A. This is a common problem. Some people use a barrier cream on their ankles to prevent this, I have heard, but my wife's way to alleviate (but not entirely cure) the problem was to wear Coolmax inner socks and wool mix outers. The wool absorbs the sweat which the Coolmax wicks away from the skin. Only wear gaiters if you really, really must, since they make things worse.

John Illy, Bradford

A. I started to experience this rash about 4-5 years ago. It only errupted after a fairly severe walk eg Lakeland fell walking. Unfortunately, it has now started to appear after less severe walks. My GP hasn't any idea what it is.

On the positive side it doesn't irritate or hurt and disappears after 4-5 days. Problem is it doesn't look good!!

I've researched it (on the Web) and found that it has been given the nickname of "Golfers' Vasculitis"
