In-use Test:

Kathmandu's crew-neck Butte is a close fitting yet very comfortable baselayer. It's true to size with good long sleeves. The merino wool itself feels very soft and warm next to the skin - certainly no sense of itchiness at all.

The overall quality of the knit appears good - it's even and there are no lines or ridges suggesting that the manufacturer has used good quality merino.

The breathability of the Butte was very good as is usually the case with merino wool. And even after 3 or 4 long day's wear - for several Peak District walks in February - there was pretty well no odour retention at all.

So far I've put it though a washing machine 'wool' cycle twice and it's been fine. There's no sign of pilling and the seams remain hanging nice and straight.

Buying Advice:

Good quality Merino wool garments are relatively expensive but do offer great warmth and excellent breathability - so can be worn for most of the year. However Merino wool can vary in quality - depending on its source; the merino used the Butte from Kathmandu appears to be of good quality as borne out by the fact that it feels very comfortable next to the skin, is warm, so far there's no sign of pilling and the garment has kept its shape.

If you're a merino wool fan (and so are prepared to take a little more care when washing the garment), then the Butte from Kathmandu is definitely worth a look for 3 season walking.
