GPS Waypoints for Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk

Q. I have prebooked a trip to Britain to do [Wainwright's] Coast2coast [walk].

I am considering purchasing a Garmin 10 or Garmin 20. I know nothing about GPS other than what I am reading on your site and in [a] book.

Walks I have done such as the Camino de Santiago, and the National Trail in Israel are well waymarked on the trail, but this one looks a little different.

I have all the GPS waypoints in that book and wonder can I down load these manually onto the GPS i.e. by entering say NX 96042 11791 while I am in NZ or do I have to wait until I get to Britain. I have read your comments about different maps on the machine but as I haven't yet got one am not sure what they do or don't do.

At this stage you may be considering telling me to stay home.

Kind Regards

Neil Wynne, Palmerston North, New Zealand

A. You can start inputting the GPS Waypoints by hand in New Zealand but there is little point. It is going to take a long time and you could easily make a mistake which could prove catastrophic when you get to finally do the walk.

See Using Garmin GPS to input Waypoints by hand for more information but bear in mind the GPS Waypoints data file for Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk comprises 192 individual waypoints comprising 12 digits each - so that's 192 x 12 = 2,304 number inputs.

Why would you attempt to do this by hand when we already have the data available to download direct to your GPS at the touch of a button?

Don't stay home - come and enjoy the walk - it is fantastic. Just buy a GPS first, read the manual, test it and get to know it before you get on the plane.

Hope this helps . . .
