The Effects of Heat when Walking, Hiking and Rambling

It's easy to assume that exposure to excessive heat is a rare problem in the UK. However, cases of severe sunburn and/or heat exhaustion are not uncommon. Here are some tips to avoid the problems.

You should consider:

Food and Water

Most of these conditions are down to water depletion - so maintaining intake of water is fundamental.

Drink more than you need whenever water is available.

During your walk drink a little but often.

Don't hoard water until collapse is imminent.

Make use of natural supplies whenever possible.

For information on food - see Hill Skills > What to Take > Nutrition

Fitness

In high temperatures do the minimum of work necessary to achieve your objective. Keep out of the sun during the hottest part of the day.

Protection

Use high protection skin creams on all exposed areas not forgetting under your chin, your lips and the tops of your ears.

Cover your head and wear adequate sun glasses.

Wear loose, lightweight clothing which is sweat permeable and light coloured.

Do not struggle uphill wearing waterproof clothing.
