Devised by Percy Donald in 1935, 'Donalds' are Scottish Lowlands Mountains which are over 2000ft (approx 610m)) above mean sea level and has "sufficient topographical merit" that he outlined in a complex formula.

To have "sufficient topographical merit" the hill must be a highest top in the area with a separation of at least 17 'units'. One 'unit' is either one-twelfth of one mile - 440ft (approx 134m) - along the Top's connecting ridge or at least 50ft (approx 30m) of prominence. The separation is the sum of these two measures.

For the purposes of defining 'Donalds', the 'Scottish Lowlands' is the area of Scotland south of the Highland Boundary Fault that traverses the country from Stonehaven, a pretty harbour town south of Aberdeen, on the east coast to Helensburgh, a Victorian holiday resort on the River Clyde, west of Glasgow on the west coast. This is shown as areas 1, 25, 26 and 27 on the intereactive map below.

There are currently 89 Donalds in Scotland.
