Waterproof Jackets

Sprayway Summit Peak Walking and Hiking Jacket

I recently bought a Sprayway Summit Peak Jacket and over the Christmas holidays I was able to put it to the test while doing a days walking in the Peak District. It failed the test.

The pit zips under the arms both let in water and my arms were soaked on the underside from the shoulder to the wrist. On examination of the zips it was found impossible to get them to close fully, there is always a small gap between the two halves of the zip. Water then gets in and capillaries along the inside of the sleeve and soaks your arms!

Now this is a top of the range jacket and having paid out £250 you don't expect it to fail on such a basic thing as keeping you dry. To quote Sprayway's own publicity "This jacket was developed specifically for extreme high altitude conditions and is quite simply the ultimate mountain jacket of the Sprayway range".

Well it rained all day and the wind was strong but the conditions were far from extreme yet it still let in water. I have now returned the jacket to the shop and exchanged it for one of a make without zips under the arms. The point of all this, and experience should have warned me, is that zips no matter how good the sales pitch, just don't keep the water out, not only the pit zips but none of the pocket zips either. At least Sprayways don't.
