In-use Test:

Several week-long walking trips during summer in Scotland were used to test these Lowa Munro Walking boots. Walking on these trips was on and around the Cairngorm plateau featuring rocky mountain paths, peat moorland and scree fields. Because the majority of the walking was in mountain conditions, I usually had a relatively heavy day-pack.

Many of my comments about the Lowa Stirling GTX Walking Boot apply equally to the Lowa Munro. The lacing system is robust and simple to use. I found the boots to be supremely comfortable through to the end of some extremely long days. My ankles were well supported and toes protected whether walking on the flat or up and down some long and often steep ascents/descents. As well, the stability on scree and mud was excellent.

This boot has a leather lining (as opposed to a Goretex one) - so I wasn't surprised to find that my feet were cooler. Also not surprisingly, I did find that, over time, the water resistance started to diminish. I'd expect that this can be re-instated to a large extent by using a product such as Nikwax.

However - I do still think these are a cracking pair of boots for mountain walking. The level of comfort almost immediately out-of-the-box is quite amazing.

Buying Advice:

As with the Lowa Stirling GTX, these boots are manufactured to a high standard by a manufacturer with a long history of boot-making. Features such as the cemented outsole that can be re-soled plus the hand-wrapped rubber rand suggests that they will be extremely durable. During the time that I've been using them none of the exposed stitching has shown any sign of wear.

The thermal quality of the boots means that they are not really suited for extremely cold, UK winter walking. However, if you're looking for a top quality, supremely comfortable boot for hiking the scottish mountains or lake district ridge walks during any of the other three seasons, these Lowa Munro Walking Boots are an excellent option.

They also have a woman specific last used to produce an anatomically correct women's fitting boot..
