Treats for Walkers, Hikers and Ramblers

In a recent poll we asked What treat do you take with you when out walking.

The results:

Chocolate (55% - no surprise there)
Fruit (13%),
Cake (12%) and
Crisps (6% - my favourite).

16% of you though chose something not on our list - we had a lot of recommendations for Kendal Mint Cake, Oatcakes and Geo/Granary Bars. A number of you also seem to like a nip of whiskey (just a nip mind).

We had one recommendation for Shrimp Soup (?) and some more . . . er creative suggestions - such as . . .

Super chunky peanut butter and banana sandwich on granary bread!!!

YUMMY....

My favourite disgusting treat is a jam doughnut! Very impractical, as they always get squashed in the kit bag, but there's nothing to beat the feeling of jam running down your elbow, and gritty sugar stuck round your mouth, at the end of a hard walk - and you can always get second helpings later by licking the jam that's squirted down the front of your anorak.

Yours Disgracefully,
Ron Linton

Hi,

I just HAD to add my four pennyworth to this, as I have been searching for the perfect 'treat' for years.

I think I have cracked it in a home made concoction which is a sort of mix of power bar (yeuk) flapjack and muesli bar. I use a base of oats and treacle, then just let my creative juices flow. The trouble is, I NEVER use the same mix twice, and when I get a really stunning one, I wish I had kept the recipe!

One of the late favourites was made with almonds and dried raspberries. I just try to mix unusual vine/tropical/ fruits and nuts and the end result is usually better than anything I could buy, plus the ration is larger and more nutritious.

If you like, would be GLAD to supply you with a recipe for the site.

Best wishes

Les Singleton

Well Les, I can confidently predict, without fear of contradiction, that (and I speak for EVERYONE connected with go4awalk.com) we would all be delighted to get the recipe. Send it in and we'll publish it so everyone can have a go at making some. We will of course .. er .. 'Gear Test' it first - all in the name of science you understand! Ed.

OK - here goes . . .

FLAPJACK

INGREDIENTS:

100g (3oz) Polyunsaturated Margarine.
200g (7oz) Golden Syrup.
240g (8oz) Quaker Oats
100g Chopped no-soak Dried Apricots or Raisins

METHOD.

1. Lightly grease baking tray (17x11in).

2. Warm Margarine& Syrup together until the Margarine is melted.

Add oats and apricots and stir well.

Tip the mixture into prepared tin and spread evenly.

3. Bake in middle of oven 190°C/375°F/Gas Mark5 for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

(You can alter this time to make the flapjack soft and chewy, or crispy and (ouch) gum-splitting)

4. Remove from oven and let cool in tin.

5. When cold, cut into portions and store in a tin.

I usually add to this very basic recipe anything I fancy, from dried raspberries to any kind of nut. Let yourself go, just see how well YOUR efforts measure up to the shop-bought variety. I never BUY shop stuff anymore!

Happy walking (and eating)

Les Singleton, Derby
