Q. I am looking for a winter jacket for casual as opposed to extreme use. The problem is that I need one with very good wicking properties. What recommendations do people have?

A. Sure - take a look at our Gear Tests and Gear Guides or click on the 'Gear' Navigational Hill above.
Hope this helps

PS I've always found Paramo to work pretty well!

A. I use a Paramo Alta II for just such casual use. It's expensive, but light, quiet, waterproof, functional and warm, with vents for when it gets warmer. With a few base layers on underneath, it has even gone on its first skiing trip to Vail, USA this year and coped admirably well. Personally, I think it has a certain understated elegance to its design. I've not had to make use of it yet, but all the various reviews also say Paramo has first class after-sales support (fixing, mending, re-proofing, etc.).

A. have just bought the Berghaus Paclite jacket. It is the lightest jacket I have ever bought and is perfect over a fleece. Idoubt it can be bettered. I will also use it for skiing as well as walking. I searched all over and found it on [the web] for £120. In many places it sells at £150.

A. Dave Miller should look at Paramo jackets, which come in a variety of styles. Excellent wicking, warm as a lightweight fleece (at least), comfy to wear, and keep out 100% of the water 100% of the time!

A. It depends what you want to do with the jacket. Is it also for casual use away from the mountains? Is noise a factor? Is it for four season use? For ultimate comfort, I would recommend a Ventile smock/jacket. It obviates the need for wicking, is waterproof for 10 hours and is so comfortable, as well as making no noise (good for wildlife fans!).

A. As others have stated, Paramo is excellent for condensation control in the colder months. Also any Keela SYstem Dual Protect jacket is great as it has a wicking lining that moves misture into a gap between the fabrics and allows it to escape at its own rate. I use a Keela Spectrum jacket for winter and it is excellent.

A. Thanks for the info, I've broken the piggy bank and gone for a Paramo.
