Where do I leave may car when wild camping?

Q. I was wondering if you could tell me a good place to wild camp in Wales, as I am a first time wild camper I have been doing a lot of research on this and no one ever seems to ask where we would keep our cars.

I have been to Wales and I can't just pull over and leave my car by where I want to camp.

Could you please give me some advice on where the best place to wild camp and the best place to leave my car.

A. You're quite right, you can't just leave your car just anywhere.

My opinion is that the safest place to leave a car is in a village car park, rather than out in the countryside since a car left in an unusual place will attract the attention of those people who will worry that somebody is missing out on the hills, and also those people who will take advantage of a lack of witnesses to thieve from your car or take it for a spin.

Where to camp? - You don't say whereabouts in Wales you're intending to go and its perhaps not a good idea to advertise prime wild camping spots on the internet.

You might well find some nice spots adjacent to some nice mountain tarns, for instance.

Whilst wild camping is illegal in England and Wales (not Scotland) it is likely that there will be one or two other wild campers at these places. A study of the relevant map will probably suggest some likely spots to you.

Happy camping!

A. I often go out wild camping and hiking for a weekend. I have left my car in towns on the read side for a week or more with no probs. If poss, I try to park near a police station and advise them what I'm doing with a contact number.

NB. Wild Camping and The Law in England, Scotland and Wales.

Tents cannot be pitched just anywhere because every piece of Britain is owned by some individual or some organisation and according to the strict letter of the law permission must be obtained prior to pitching tent and camping.

In practice however, this is often impractical and wild camping is usually tolerated in the more remote areas - typically, more than half a day's walk from an official campsite or other accommodation providing you:

In Scotland, the current access legislation (which came into effect in early 2005) is explicit about your right to wild camp on hill land.

There appears to be an exception to this with respect to camping in Dartmoor National Park where the right to wild camping is actually enshrined in the National Parks & Access to the Countryside Act, 1949 amendment Dartmoor Commons Act, 1985 - see Wild Camping in the UK for more details.

For the definitive answer with respect to wild camping in Scotland see the answer supplied by the Scottish Natural Heritage

Hope this helps
