Wide Walking and Hiking Boots

Q. I am a trail/hill walker. My 10 year old boots (once resoled) are cracking and need replacing. I have a broad foot and have tried on many leading brand boots, but all seem too narrow.

Does anyone know of a medium weight leather boot (other than the Scarpa SL XX) preferably not with a high ankle which is broader than average?

A. Altberg in Richmond, North Yorkshire, make boots to order; one of my colleagues has just had a pair made with one boot a different width to the other, so they should be able to help.

The Tourist Information Office in Richmond will be able to supply the address and phone number (Altberg's shop is just off the Market Square in Richmond).

A. At Catstycam, the Outdoor Shop in Glenridding, Cumbria, Tel: 017684 82351, we offer a boot stretching & modifying service and will guarantee the fit of the boot for the life of the boot. We also carry a large range of top quality boots that'll fit almost any foot (providing its human!)

I know we're a long way from Nottingham - but it might be worth a visit. We're based at the Southern end of Ullswater at the base of Helvellyn and the walking round here is fantastic.
