Scrambling Kit?

Q. Hi there - just getting back into some mountain and hill walking, and would like to tackle some scrambling.

At what point would people recommend taking a rope as a safety item?

Having not done climbing for many many years - I'd also like some advice on how to use it - surely as an ad-hoc item, scramblers don't really take out a harness, helmet and the works?

Would it be safer to simply attach to waist with a figure of eight, and take a few chocks to secure the rope.

Incidentally - I'll be walking in a pair.

Any useful websites on this?

A. Hi Paul

Like you, I climbed in my younger days and now have returned to scambling and it is fabulous.

My very strong advice is to take a scrambling course (weekend or full week) at [somewhere like] Plas y Brenin, the National Mountain Training School in North Wales.

You will get expert tuition with a group of like minded people and have a great time.

Enjoy
