Hiking Rannoch Moor

Q. We walked the West Highland Way this year. Prior to walking the Great Glen Way (at the end of April next year) we plan to hike across Rannoch Moor in 3 stages:

  1. Kings House Hotel - east to Black Corries Lodge – Tigh na Cruaiche – north bank of Loch Laidon – Rannoch Station
  2. Rannoch Station – east to Doire na h-Innes – north to follow Allt Eigheach river – north-west to Clach an Fhuarain – Corrour Old Lodge ruin – Peter’s Rock – east to Loch Ossian and bunkhouse – Corrour Station
  3. Corrour Station – to north-east follow path parallel to railway – Loch Treig – Creaguaineach Lodge – follow river Allt na Lairige – bothy – follow river Allt Leachdach – Corriechoille – to the west paved road south and parallel to the railway – Spean Bridge

Comments are very welcome regarding the feasibility, difficulty, skill needs, accommodation tips, map tips for this trip?

Many thanks in advance and greetings from Belgium.

A. I would say that your proposed route is perfectly feasible and should be very enjoyable. My comments are: Day 1 - There should be no major difficulties. Watch out for the sudden change of direction of the route in the forest. Parts of the track in the forest are quite boggy. Day 2 This is a good track/path all the way and shouldnt provide any difficulties at all. Check that the bunkhouse is open, though (it isnt always open) - otherwise theres a Youth Hostel nearby by Loch Ossian. Make sure to book beds in advance as there's nowhere else to stay for miles and miles ...and miles... Day 3 - The path next to the railway is very boggy in places but once past the third river crossing , tracks and paths provide easy walking all the way to Spean Bridge. If the rivers are in spate, or you have stayed at the SYHA, then the path from the head of Loch ossian, by the hostel would be a better route. Its a nice route... you'll have a great time.
