Q. This might sound daft, but are there any groups which take into account walkers who have a fear of heights. I can climb up the sides of hills, mountains etc. but then suddenly I feel quite scared and just want to get down as fast as possible. This has happened when I was with a walking group and I felt so ridiculous, but it has, unfortunately, made me loose confidence. Any ideas apart from getting some therapy!!!!

A. In my youth I used to regularly rock climb and spend weeks on the fells but stopped when we had children. 22 years on I have totally lost my nerve and if anything, have gone completely the other way. Having climbed Helvellyn (from Swirls car park - not Glenridding), Skiddaw and Blencathra on my last visit to the Lakes I managed the heights by looking at the path directly infront of me only, (not looking around me until I once again felt safe to do so) and convincing myself the paths were well-trodden and that thousands of walkers have proceeded me without incident. I know how you feel and there's not much anyone can do to help you but don't give up. Don't hide your fears - tell people. Climbing a particular mountain whilst facing your demons is even more satisfying at the end of the day.
