How do I download GPS Waypoints to my PC?

Q. I have just bought a Garmin etrex summit software version 3.51 , with a serial cable linked to my pc.

Do I need any software (e.g. Map source?) in order to download waypoints to my GPS via my pc, or will your walks data transfer ok?
