Q. What is the lowest/simplest peak to conquer, to justify saying 'I've climbed a mountain'? [Possible trip for the kids]
Stephen Ritchie, Glenrothes

A. The nearest 'mountain' to Glenrothes is Ben Cleuch - though this is still on my 'to do' list so cannot advise on its suitability for kids.
For more information on what makes a mountain a mountain and not a hill - see What is a mountain?
Hope this helps

A. I would say that Ben Cleuch is a perfectly good hill for kids to climb. There's a very straightforward path to the top from Tillicoultry. Its quite steep, but straightforward. There's other opportunities in the Ochils too -Kings Seat and/or Whitewisp Hill from Dollar Glen..for example Make sure you supply those kids with ticking pencils if you start on the Ochils, though!
