Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk waypoints- Latitude/Longitude Vs British Grid

Q. I have always used lat long as a navigational grid.

We are making our first trip to the UK and intend to do the Coast to Coast walk. We have downloaded the waypoints for the GPS only to find that they are in the British Grid system.

I'm sure one is convertible to the other, and that UK maps must have a grid marking system similar to the lat/long used on U.S. maps, but I don't know how to do it.

Is the British Grid convertible to distance and direction as are lat/long. Knowing that a minute of lat is a nautical mile and that a minute of long is a nautical mile corrected for latitude is handy?

Cheers

A. The downloadable GPS Waypoints for Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk - and indeed all the downloadble GPS Waypoints available on go4awalk.com - use the Position Format = British Grid and Map Datum - ord srvy GB because this is the grid marked on British Ordnance Survey Maps.

To have the waypoints in lat lon would be of no use whatsoever since they would not bear any relationship to the grid lines marked on the map.

See Downloadable GPS Waypoints for the Coast to Coast Walk for more information.

Hope this helps

A. Make sure you set GPS to British Grid and the downloaded waypoints will work just fine . . .
