Q. I've had my Karrimor boots for over 5 years and done a lot of walking with no foot problems at all. However, had a lovely long bank holiday weekend in Lakes and Yorkshire Dales walking about 30 miles in total recently but came back sporting two very painful big toe nails that have now turned black! Any advice - is it just time for new boots?

A. Sounds like time for new boots I'm afraid - see our Walking Boots Gear Guide for some independent advice.
Hope this helps

A. Whenever I'm asked "What boots should I buy" my answer is "Ones that fit". It's not as glib as it sounds. We all get a little carried away with brand names and advice from gear tests by experts who, in all probability, don't have the same shaped feet as the reader. If pressed for more advice I'd ask whether the questioner has wide (Saxon) feet or narrow (Latin) feet. If the feet are narrow try an Italian maker; if they're wide (as mine are) try a German maker.
