The Lyke Wake Walk

Q. Please could you tell me if there are any companies that lead the Lyke Wake walk?

Christine Bradley, Newport

A. If I am free, I am more than happy to guide people across the LWW. All you need to do is let me know the date and if free we can work out the logistics.

I love the walk so there will be no charge.

NB. You can contact Neil via his Find New Walking Friends Message: Box: 106778. Ed.

Neil , Warrington

A. Part of the challenge (& fun!!) of the LWW is finding the route from one end to the other. Since its inception 60 years ago the idea of the Walk has been to find your way from the start to the end under your own steam and with your own navigation efforts. There is no prescribed route as such but the Lyke Wake Club has a general requirement that valid Crossings should stick to the moorland summits a far as possible but nearly all Crossings these days follow what is referred to as the Classic Route (40 miles start to finish) However, last year I crossed via a northern route which was 51 miles. Don't forget to report your Crossing to the Club (www.lykewake.org) to become a Dirger or Witch as Club members are referred to. That said there will be some who can, for any of a number of reasons, only do the Walk on a guided/organised crossing.

Ian Evans, Willoughby, Lincolnshire, England

A. The best way to find fellow walkers to walk The Lyke Wake Walk or any other long distance walk, is to put an ad in our Find New Walking Friends section. See The go4awalk.com Message Board for details.

Hope this helps . . .

A. Hi Hugh I'm also wanting to do the Lyke wake walk this summer. Please contact me to arrange a time if it's okay.

Jeff Stevens, Pontefract

A. I would like to hear from anyone interested in doing the Lyke Wake Walk this summer.

Hugh Martin, Henfield

A. As far as I know, no. The Walk isn't really suitable for large parties and although the navigation is tough, most competent walkers can manage it without a guide.

David Gordon, London
